Chris Aran will be releasing his latest book of short stories on the Amazon Kindle. This new collection, a follow up to Awake While Dreaming, will also be available for purchase through Amazon.com with print copies available through Create Space.
Amazon Kindle and self publishing a book
Awake While Dreaming was released in January of 2013, and soon, the next book of short stories will be coming to the Kindle available through Amazon.
This new collection of stories has been culminating over the last year. I’d just finished editing and submitting my short film And Then I Woke Up into film festivals and knew I had to keep writing. The first collection of short stories was well received and it felt like time to start another one.
One of the joys of being a writer these days is knowing that whatever your stories may be, they can find a place to be distributed. Whether in a blog post that can be sent out into the vast expanses of the internet, or in a more traditional sense, by publishing. Publishing has gotten a bit easier for many.
Amazon provides a service called KDP which stands for Kindle Direct Publishing. Once your stories are written in book form, you convert it into a file structure that can be used by the Kindle, and upload it to KDP. At that point you determine pricing and with a few simple steps, you have become a self publisher!
Will the book only be available on Amazon Kindle?
The answer to this one is easy. No. Thankfully Amazon also has a partner site called Create Space which prints softcovers on demand by order. For the purists who like to feel the pages turn while they get roped into a story, the new book will be available in soft cover as well as in a digital format.
Unlike Awake While Dreaming, the new collection, (still working on a title) will feature artwork to accompany each story. As a filmmaker as well as a writer, my goal with the next book is to stir your imaginations with the stories and several accompanying rich images that will be individual visual interpretations by various artists.
What kinds of stories can you expect? I can tell you that if you are a fan of the supernatural, horror, science fiction, and even the occasional love story, you’ll find something great within the pages. Some of my favorite authors include Richard Matheson, Chuck Palahniuk, Neil Gaiman, and Phillip Pullman (mostly for His Dark Materials trilogy) so that should give you an idea of what to expect.
How to format for ebooks and great reading suggestions
KDP seems great and now you know what kind of content will be coming in the next book i’ll be writing. But maybe you’re curious yourself how to get that content of yours in the pesky format that ebook readers need.
I use a great program called Calibre. This piece of software made the transition from my Pages documents (used Pages over Word because it was easier to export an ePub file) to the Kindle required Mobi file format. I wouldn’t try to publish anything without it.
As for some inspiration, I’ve read a few good books lately including City Of Dark Magic (and it’s sequel City Of Lost Dreams), Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children (and its sequel Hollow City), The Ocean At The End Of The Lane, and Dammed (and its sequel Doomed). And of course an all time favorite that MUST be read, American Gods.
